All gyms offer classes including everything from pilates to spin, and there are dedicated areas to do your own exercise and stretches. Plus, of course, there’s also standard equipment, weight areas, and personal trainers on offer.

Not for the faint of heart, CrossFit is a high-intensity workout involving weights, aerobics and gymnastics. It aims to improve stamina, flexibility and strength, as well as work on your coordination and overall fitness. It’s interval-based training with a focus on diet and nutrition as well. There are several CrossFit studios throughout Sydney’s CBD and its surrounds, including Surry Hills, Alexandria, Waterloo and the Eastern Suburbs. CrossFit Athletic is on Margaret St in the heart of the CBD, and offers different levels of programming depending on what you want out of the session, starting at Base (the basic balanced fitness session) and moving through to Met Con (short for Metabolic Conditioning), which is high-intensity and focused on conditioning.

Harbour Bridge Run, Sydney CBD

Keen to head outdoors and enjoy some of Sydney’s most spectacular views? The Harbour Bridge Run not only delivers a great spectacle, it’s also handy if you want to improve your fitness. Starting on Observatory Hill, the route takes you along the Harbour Bridge, past Luna Park, and then along the waterfront through to McMahons Point and Lavender Bay. It’s a 10-kilometre circuit if you choose to run or walk back, and as you head back to the CBD you’ll be treated with incredible views of the Opera House, Circular Quay and the Eastern Suburbs.

Botanic Gardens, Sydney CBD

This is a gorgeous circuit which takes in some of the most beautiful sights of Sydney. The full walk or run is 12 kilometres, but because each part is so accessible to public transport you can start or stop anywhere, anytime. The route takes you from Circular Quay, and along the coast to the Opera House, where you can either run around the sails or cut through to the Botanic Gardens. Head past Mrs Macquarie’s Chair (stop to take in the view) and head through to the Domain and Hyde Park. Then follow the path all the way down to Darling Harbour, across Pyrmont Bridge and into the Rocks. Before you know it, you’ll be back at Circular Quay – the perfect spot to finish, and treat yourself with a nice cold drink or coffee.

Wentworth Park, Ultimo

It’s now one of the most beloved parks in Sydney, but did you know it actually used to be a swamp? A tonne of sport happens here, including cricket and rugby, which never stops thanks to its floodlights. It’s a fantastic park to simply run around in, drop to the grass for some stretching, and then keep going on your merry way. If you want a little more than that, there are four exercise stations scattered around the park. Just remember, these can get pretty busy during peak hours, so you may need to be patient and wait your turn.
