Your guide to a summer night out in Glebe

Anzac Bridge Sunset

When it comes to the inner-west, Glebe is the perfect spot for a summer evening of shopping, dinner, cocktails and entertainment. Nestled in between city and suburbia, Glebe is home to a tantalising list of pubs, restaurants, and places to enjoy a night out with family and friends. Right by Broadway, walking distance from the city, and sporting the massive range of options available at Glebe Point Road, Glebe is a great place to unwind and relax on a weekend or holiday night.

Getting there

Depending on where exactly in the suburb you’re heading to, there are a few ways to go about getting to Glebe.
With public transport, you can catch the light rail from Central station - just head through the gates at the Grand Concourse with your Opal card, and tap on before you get on the train. Both Glebe and Jubilee station are situated within the suburb.
Alternatively, if you’re heading to Glebe Point Road or Broadway, just catch a bus from Central Station, or take a ten minute walk down George Street. You can also walk from Redfern, but it’s more like twenty to thirty minutes through winding suburbia. Stick to Central, it’s only one stop
away. Finally, there’s a plethora of parking in the area (it is near Central Sydney, after all), and Broadway is easily accessible, with plenty of parking if your destination is within walking distance.

Glebe Point Road

The major road of the suburb is Glebe Point Road, a magnificent collection of boutique shopping, as well as some of the best restaurants in Sydney. If you’re looking for somewhere to go in Glebe, this should be your first stop.

Starting just a one minute walk from Broadway (which makes it perfect to drive to, or combine with some shopping at Westfield), you’ll find a host of shops selling books, antiques and clothing, but the main draw of the road is the ridiculous assortment of cafes and restaurants serving cuisines from every corner of the globe. People looking for a light snack as they peruse the road will find refuge at Grand Gelato or Doughnut Time, and anybody getting in early enough can have an afternoon snack at Madame Frou Frou.

While a simple Google gives a pretty weighty list to sort through, we’ve put together a few of our favourites on offer at Glebe Point Road.

Glebe Point Diner

While a bit of a glum name, this diner is simple and effective; made from scratch, both a la carte and to share, and with a delicious wine menu, it’s an unpretentious and delicious meal that should please even the pickiest of eaters.

Almustafa

Australian Lebanese cuisine at its finest, Almustafa prides itself on atmosphere and taste. The decor takes pains to be welcomingly Lebanese) without being gaudily so, with beautiful tapestries and rugs adorning the walls. Boasting more than a couple of highly starred reviews by the Sydney Morning Herald and Degroots, it’s a great place for large groups to relax, enjoy a meal, and if you’re in the mood, have a puff on a traditional Lebanese shisha afterwards.

Alfie & Hetty

Looking for something a little more elegant? Alfie & Hetty is a delectable Australian and French cuisine fusion joint, currently under the purview of Benjamin Loiseau, a Parisian import who
specialises in roasts and seafood. Come and enjoy the live music in the restaurant on Sundays.

Badde Manors

The struggle of finding good places to eat as a group that caters for somebody with dietary requirements can be endless. Badde Manors solves that, by not only being a vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free friendly cafe, but by having some of the best damn food available in the city.
There might not be enough time in life to stuff a mushroom, but Badde Manors has that covered. Badde Manors is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and is work it at all three.

Bars

Beers at Glebe

If you’d rather skip the meal and go straight for the drinks, Glebe Point Road has you easily covered on that front.

The Little Guy

A small bar, but extraordinarily inviting. Any and all patrons enjoy free (unlimited) popcorn while frequenting there, and they mostly stock decent craft beer and a decidedly above-average cocktail menu.

Tommy’s Beer Cafe

Perfect for anybody used to decent European beers, as well as offering a host of German foods at the bar to whet your appetite. If the metre long sausage isn’t to your fancy, perhaps their massive selection of beers might be.

Sappho Books Cafe & Wine Bar

This place closes a little early at 6:30 pm, but it makes for an enjoyable pre-drinks venue of good wine and good scenery, if beer isn’t your thing.

Take a walk

Finally, one of the best things to do on a warm, summer night in Glebe is to take a simple stroll along the Foreshore Walk, looking off across the sights of the city of Sydney at night. There’s plenty of stores and restaurants in the area if the walk leaves you peckish, and when you finish, you’ll be right by Broadway. Watch a movie, head back to Glebe Point Road, or have a couple of drinks to relax.
